The problem

Why Insurance Advice Matters In New Zealand

Many New Zealanders insure the things they own before they insure the income, health, and people those things depend on.

FSC research says around 70% of Kiwis continue to be underinsured when it comes to life and health insurance.

That does not mean everyone needs more insurance. It does mean many households have not clearly worked through:

  • What would happen if income stopped
  • What ACC may or may not cover
  • How long savings would last
  • Whether existing cover still fits
  • What debt or expenses would remain
  • What financial pressure a partner or family would carry
  • Whether cover is affordable long term

Insurance advice helps work through those questions before looking at products.

The basics

What Does Insurance Advice Help With?

Insurance advice helps you understand what financial risks may need to be protected and what options may be available.

This may include:

  • Protecting family income
  • Helping cover mortgage or rent payments
  • Providing a lump sum after death or terminal illness
  • Providing support after serious illness or permanent disability
  • Helping with private medical treatment costs
  • Protecting self-employed income or business expenses
  • Reviewing existing policies
  • Understanding where cover overlaps or leaves gaps

Insurance does not remove every risk, and no policy pays in every situation.

The policy wording, underwriting, exclusions, claim definitions, and insurer assessment all matter.

The purpose

Why Review Your Insurance?

Insurance needs can change over time.

A review may be useful when:

  • You buy a home
  • You refinance or increase your mortgage
  • You have children
  • Your income changes
  • You become self-employed
  • You start or grow a business
  • You change jobs
  • Your premiums have increased
  • You are unsure what your current policies cover
  • Your health, debt, or household position has changed

A review does not automatically mean replacing existing cover. The outcome may be:

  • Keeping existing cover
  • Adjusting benefit amounts
  • Changing waiting or benefit periods
  • Removing unnecessary overlap
  • Adding cover where there is a clear gap
  • Leaving some risks uninsured
  • Doing nothing for now
How we work

How Does Nik Work Through Your Insurance Advice?

Insurance advice should start with your needs, goals, responsibilities, and financial position, not with a product.

Nik works through what matters most, what could create serious financial pressure, and what options may help manage those risks.

  1. Understand Your Situation

    We look at:

    • Income
    • Mortgage or rent
    • Household expenses
    • Dependants
    • Debt
    • Existing insurance
    • Sick leave and savings
    • ACC position
    • Health and occupation
    • Goals and priorities
  2. Clarify What Matters Most

We talk through what you would want protected if something went wrong. This may include:

    • Keeping the household running
    • Protecting family income
    • Reducing debt pressure
    • Covering medical treatment costs
    • Creating options after illness or injury
    • Keeping cover affordable over time
  3. Identify The Main Risks

We look at the events that could create the biggest financial impact. This may include:

    • Death or terminal illness
    • Serious illness
    • Permanent disability
    • Illness or injury stopping you working
    • Medical treatment costs
    • Loss of income
  4. Consider The Options

Before looking at insurance, we consider what else may already be available. This may include:

    • Savings
    • Sick leave
    • ACC
    • Employer benefits
    • Existing insurance
    • Household income
    • Other financial resources

Insurance is only one part of the discussion.

  5. Compare And Structure The Cover

If insurance is appropriate, we compare available options and explain how they work. This may include:

    • Types of cover
    • Benefit amounts
    • Waiting periods
    • Benefit periods
    • Ownership
    • Policy definitions
    • Exclusions
    • Offsets
    • Premiums
    • Affordability over time

The focus is matching the structure to your needs, goals, and budget.

  6. Apply, Review And Support At Claim Time

If you decide to apply, Nik helps prepare the application and supporting information. Nothing is submitted to an insurer without your approval.

Once cover is in place, it should be reviewed when life changes. If you need to claim, Nik can help you understand the claim process and what information may be required. The insurer still assesses the claim under the policy wording.

Existing cover

Can Nik Review Your Existing Insurance?

Yes. Nik can review existing insurance policies and help explain what they are designed to cover.

This may include checking:

  • Types of cover
  • Benefit amounts
  • Ownership
  • Waiting periods
  • Benefit periods
  • Policy definitions
  • Exclusions or special terms
  • Premium structure
  • Whether cover still lines up with your current situation

Reviewing existing cover does not automatically mean replacing it.

Any change should be considered carefully, especially where existing policies have older wording, accepted medical terms, or exclusions.

Applying

Applying For Insurance Cover

The application process can vary by insurer and cover type.

You may be asked about:

  • Age
  • Occupation
  • Income
  • Smoking status
  • Health history
  • Current symptoms or treatment
  • Medications
  • Past injuries or medical conditions
  • Family medical history
  • Higher-risk activities
  • Existing insurance
  • Previous claims

The insurer may ask for:

  • Medical information
  • Financial evidence
  • Extra questionnaires
  • Medical reports or tests in some cases

The insurer may offer cover as applied for, offer different terms, add exclusions, apply a premium loading, reduce the benefit, or decline the application.

Cover is not in place until the insurer has accepted the application and the policy has started.

What Insurance Cover Do I Need?

It depends on your income, mortgage, debt, family situation, goals, existing cover, and what financial risks you want to manage.

Is Insurance Advice Free?

There is no adviser fee payable by you for our insurance advice service. If a policy is put in place, we are paid by the insurer.

How we are paid, including any insurer commissions, is explained clearly in Nik’s Disclosure Statement.

Can You Review My Existing Insurance?

Yes. Nik can review your existing cover and explain what it is designed to do, what it may not cover, and whether it still lines up with your current situation.

Will I Need Medical Checks?

Sometimes. The insurer may ask for medical information, questionnaires, reports, blood tests, or other evidence depending on your age, health, cover amount, and application.

Can I Get Insurance If I Have Health Issues?

You may still be able to apply, but the insurer may offer different terms, exclusions, a premium loading, a lower benefit, or decline cover.

Do I Need Life Cover And Income Protection?

They do different things. Life Cover usually provides a lump sum after death or terminal illness. Income Protection usually provides a monthly benefit if illness or injury affects your ability to work.

Does ACC Replace Insurance?

Not usually. ACC may help after a covered injury, but it does not generally apply to illness. Insurance and ACC can interact differently depending on the policy wording.

How Often Should I Review My Insurance?

It is worth reviewing cover when your mortgage, income, family situation, business, health, or financial position changes.
