About Nik

Meet Nik Trainin, Financial Adviser

Straightforward, practical advice that puts your circumstances before any product.

Nik focuses on the bigger picture, providing personalised advice on life insurance, income protection, health insurance, KiwiSaver and investments. His approach is centred on understanding each client’s individual circumstances, goals and priorities before exploring solutions that suit their needs.

Nik believes financial advice should be straightforward, practical and easy to understand. Rather than focusing solely on products, he takes the time to build genuine relationships with his clients, helping them make confident decisions through different stages of life. For Nik, financial advice is about more than numbers: it’s about helping people achieve their goals, look after their families and enjoy the life they’re working hard to build.

Outside of work

Outside of financial services, Nik has a strong passion for health, fitness and personal development. With a background in personal training and basketball coaching, he enjoys helping others improve their physical wellbeing, build confidence and reach their potential. He’s also passionate about mentoring young people and giving back to the community.

These days, you’re more likely to find Nik on the golf course than in a gym. He enjoys spending time at the beach during summer and heading to the mountains for snowboarding in winter. Outside of work, he values staying active, spending quality time with family and friends, and being involved in his local community.

Nik is also actively involved in his local church community and has a heart for supporting charitable initiatives, particularly those helping people facing hardship. He believes in using his experience, relationships and skills to make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Based on Auckland’s North Shore, Nik brings the same philosophy to his professional and personal life: building meaningful relationships, helping people reach their potential and making a positive difference wherever he can.
How we work

How Does Nik Work Through Your Insurance Advice?

Insurance advice should start with your needs, goals, responsibilities, and financial position, not with a product.

Nik works through what matters most, what could create serious financial pressure, and what options may help manage those risks.

  1. Understand Your Situation

    We look at:

    • Income
    • Mortgage or rent
    • Household expenses
    • Dependants
    • Debt
    • Existing insurance
    • Sick leave and savings
    • ACC position
    • Health and occupation
    • Goals and priorities
  2. Clarify What Matters Most

We talk through what you would want protected if something went wrong. This may include:

    • Keeping the household running
    • Protecting family income
    • Reducing debt pressure
    • Covering medical treatment costs
    • Creating options after illness or injury
    • Keeping cover affordable over time
  3. Identify The Main Risks

We look at the events that could create the biggest financial impact. This may include:

    • Death or terminal illness
    • Serious illness
    • Permanent disability
    • Illness or injury stopping you working
    • Medical treatment costs
    • Loss of income
  4. Consider The Options

Before looking at insurance, we consider what else may already be available. This may include:

    • Savings
    • Sick leave
    • ACC
    • Employer benefits
    • Existing insurance
    • Household income
    • Other financial resources

Insurance is only one part of the discussion.

  5. Compare And Structure The Cover

If insurance is appropriate, we compare available options and explain how they work. This may include:

    • Types of cover
    • Benefit amounts
    • Waiting periods
    • Benefit periods
    • Ownership
    • Policy definitions
    • Exclusions
    • Offsets
    • Premiums
    • Affordability over time

The focus is matching the structure to your needs, goals, and budget.

  6. Apply, Review And Support At Claim Time

If you decide to apply, Nik helps prepare the application and supporting information. Nothing is submitted to an insurer without your approval.

Once cover is in place, it should be reviewed when life changes. If you need to claim, Nik can help you understand the claim process and what information may be required. The insurer still assesses the claim under the policy wording.

Where is Nik based and who does he work with?

Nik is based on Auckland’s North Shore and works with clients across Auckland. Appointments can be in person, by phone or by video, whichever suits you.

What does Nik advise on?

Life cover, income protection, mortgage protection, trauma and TPD cover, health insurance and KiwiSaver. He also helps clients think about investments as part of the bigger picture.

Do I need to have a mortgage with Sarah to work with Nik?

No. Many clients come to Nik for insurance or KiwiSaver advice on its own. If you are also arranging a home loan, Sarah and Nik work together so your cover lines up with your lending.

What happens at the first meeting?

Nik takes the time to understand your circumstances, goals and priorities first. Only then does he look at options, explain how they work and recommend what suits your needs. Nothing is submitted to an insurer or provider without your approval.
